NANCY PELOSI'S "RICKY-RAY-RECTOR" MOMENT

One of the really old sayings in politics is "the guy across from you, he's your opponent, but the guy next to you, he's your enemy." And so it is in bold type in the "Jeff" Jefferson affair. Bush/Rove/Cheney/Whoever makes a really ham-handed move and has the Tejano Boy send the stormtroopers into Jefferson's congressional office instead of going through the normal procedure -- the procedure they've followed to be sure in the other Congressional corruption cases this year: Cunningham, Ney, Lewis, Pombo, and on and on. The usual King George tit-for-tat: kill a fly with an atom bomb, see Joe Wilson for details.

So, who have been Jefferson's best friends on this? Why the most right-wing Republicans and the most left-wing Democrats, of course. Not much room for Nancy Pelosi, eh? Here's her chance to settle an old score (she had bested Jefferson some years back in a positional battle, and apparently Jefferson wasn't nice about it) and prove her centrist bona fides by siding with the administration against a senior member of her own delegation who happens to be African-American, from Louisiana (!), and maybe guilty of -- gasp! -- garden-variety corruption. A one sentence request from Pelosi to Jefferson requesting that he relinquish his seat??? Can't say Kelso's surprised, not after Pelosi's daughter's adoring "documentary" about Bush, not after she let Jack Murtha hang out there as the loneliest man in town. Our first female minority leader has been quite something, hasn't she? She's made Dick Gephardt look tough. That's a feat. In retrospect, the party would have been way better off celebrating the coronation of the first Jewish minority leader, Martin Frost (TX). Something to think about as excitement builds over the first woman to head a major party ticket for president, no?

But there are other being settled here, too. Dennis Hastert's throwing his punches for Bush's sticking it to DeLay. And from the sidelines, Gingrich and Barr are getting their two cents in in support of Jefferson. The Congressional Black Caucus (ex execreble Harold Ford, Jr.) is putting the boot in for Pelosi's consistent refusal to give them a push on any issue after their crucial support in the leadership fight. Schumer and Nadler are in this in support of Jefferson, perhaps taking it out on Pelosi as a proxy for the horrible lady centrist in their neck of the woods.

Forget about the high-minded civics shit. This is politics at its best. And it is going to be big fun for a long while. Basically, Pelosi's now in the position of having to win back the House in November, or she's deader than...well, you know...

Kelso's Nuts love you.

Nancy Pelosi: born in Baltimore to Italian American parents; moved to California.

Frank Zappa: born in Baltimore to Italian American parents; moved to California.

San Francisco area, San Bernardino area. What's the deal with San Bernardino?

I lived in Loma Linda, adjacent to San Berdoo, on a hill above the city. The city is a lot like Fall River, Massachusetts, to me.

And Somerset, where I lived my first 18 years, adjacent to Fall River, would then play the role of Loma Linda...the capital of 7th Day Adventism!

Of which the only beliefs are:

1) No Meat; and,

2) We worship on Saturday, not Sunday. The 7th Day, in other words.

The 7's also have a strong international potluck scene going on. On Saturday afternoon after mass, which are held in seperate chapels and churches depending on nationality and language, there is a big potluck.

First of all, O'Toole, you're wrong!

Zappa was an Arab-American, not an Italian-American.

Zappa at least could speak Balto (c'mown, hon!), Pelosi not so much.

Leave you to your organized religion. Because remember that pocket Aces killed more Jews than Hitler did.

LOL One of us shouldn't be driving or blogging; I am not sure which. Zappa is Arabian? In spirit and range of genius, yes; in Sheik Yerbouti, right; and in lots of other ways. But, I think its "Zappalini".

Ya know, I had to read the Frank Zappa autobiography/biography years ago in order to know this. He used to have a bottle of mercury under his bed, exactly like a certain successful MacArthur Fellowship filmaker we know. The Summer of '84, Grand Street in Brooklyn. This Samuel Beckett-like dude also had an old medical school classroom poster of the muscles, and of the nerves in the human body. "Johno, don't look at this. You'll bum out." "OK."

Whatever that meant.

en wiki:

Frank Zappa was born in Baltimore, Maryland on December 21, 1940 to Francis Zappa (born in Partinico, Sicily, of Greek and Lebanese descent) and Rose Marie Colimore (who was of 3 quarters Italian including Sicilian and 1/4 French descent).

$$$ Zappa moved to Lancaster CA, in the low desert with his family. His father was a physics technician or something like that.

Since I rely on KN for topics to consider, I hope you don't mind if I add some background information to the comments of the entry:

Pelosi's daughter Alexandra covered the presidential campaigns in 2000 (NBC) and 2004 (HBO) and wrote a book about her experiences.

The Pelosi family has a net worth of over $25 million, mainly investments of husband Paul Pelosi. Besides a large portfolio of jointly owned San Francisco Bay Area real estate, he also has millions of dollars worth of shares in publicly traded companies such as Microsoft, Amazon.com and AT&T.

$$ Seriously, topics are important. I have been thinking about David Brooks. The same David Brooks with the liberal to conservative life trend? The same David Brooks we see on TV so much and at the ABC This Week website, talking with George Will. He is involved with Valerie Plame? Was DB trying to do some realpolitik, like GW coaching Ronald Reagan for the 1980 debates, so he can stand around the green room and look real good?

$$$$$

George Stephanopolous and E.J. Dionne are both from Fall River.

Big Mac:

Kelso defers.

And that explains the disappearance of the MacArthur Fellow fellow's testicles because he sure wasn't chasing Hank Aaron's home run record near as I could figure! About 10 years ago I saw him in the garage of the Chateau Marmont carrying Michael Stipe's laundry, and he wouldn't even say so much as "hi". Fuck him sideways.

Stephanopolous and Dionne from Fall River, huh? Wonder how they took their brown -- by foil or nasally -- and did they like their linguica well done? Most importantly, does either own an "I SMELT THE FELT AT BIG DAN'S" T-shirt?

Don't think Brooks had much to do with Valerie Plame. Again, very nasty shit they all pulled on her but it takes a certain amount of "abandon" to do it. Brooks, by Kelso's lights, is a chickenshit. Libby fucking Judith Miller. From what Kelso reads in Brooks's column, he no likey fuck much and don't likey anyone else do neither.

Good research on Zappa and Pelosi family. Nancy is another Hon who doesn't speak Hon anymore. Best Hon accent in politics belongs to Senator Barbara Mikulski.

Kelso gets that Nancy Pelosi's rich, but we're back to the TK issue. Or the Ned Lamont or Jon Corzine issue. Those folks will take a crack at the ruling class because they have enough. Guess $25mm isn't enough. Seems like a lot to Kelso.

Yeah, I'm absolutely undetermined about Lieberman and Lamont: Who is Better? and when it comes to an issue like this, I don't feel bad saying I don't know, because its an important question.

Otherwise, LOL. What the heck is the Chateau Mormont?

Dionne's son, I guess, writes a column in the Herald News about linguica, cigars, trips to Maine, Montreal and the city, clambakes and microbrews; seemingly antithetically to what I am assuming is his father's bald image and political science. Except, last year the son's column avatar changed; the cowboy hat and beard are gone, and he too is bald.

Ya know, Judaism is real important and all, but things like

REM
Mazzy Star
Rush (the band)
Morrissey
Nelly Furtado
and Neil Young

fall under the category of "Huguenot Antithetically Depressive Sydrome Enabling Spectres of Happiness".

In sports its Fran Tarkenton, Frank Gifford, Terry Bradshaw, Pedro, Joe Namath, Wayne Gretzky, Jimmy Connors, Magic Johnson and Asian Female Golfers.

This next list is a strong list, let's just say they have something to do with Huguenot, and leave it at that. No need to be megalomaniacal, being overwhelmingly aggrandizing is more than enough:

Sandy Koufax
Bob Gibson
Juan Marichal
Nolan Ryan
Tom Seaver.

"Gee this Apple-Rhubarb Pie is so good, I don't think I could ever stop eating it!"

My Huguenot uncle (mom's brother) was on the team that founded DEC; stayed for 20 years; owns 1% of the company in its DEC-trans-Honeywell Bull capitalization. Great.

Sort of makes up for all the unstoppable mild pleasure and world-class homespun goodness.

And on and on.

I'm trying to get a handle on the internecine political warfare and powerstruggles going on; which, as you say, will probably only get worse over the next few months. But the more I discover (and I'm sure we only hear the very tip of the iceberg), the more I am chilled to the bone. I could NEVER, EVER survive in an environment like that. Of course it's been going on since the days of yore (Shakespeare's history plays are chock full of it -- and his comedies, in fact, use it as a platform upon which to launch hilarious stories of love, vengeance, miscues and miscommunication, deception, etc.).

But the reality of it is just is sooo evil to me. So, in that sense, I guess am happy to just sit at my drafting table all day reading blueprints and hanging out with my cat!!!

What kind of engineering do you like, Anita? My track friend from high school is an engineer at Ford, from UMass' program; and I have a cousin who completed UVM and is working in Colorado.

What do you think of 3 Gorges? If one considers the city of Memphis and the company Wal Mart to be the result of the action of the TVA, then I can report that 3 Gorges will exert a like effect on the city of Chongqing, 30mm people, in Szechuan, in 50 years.

I have a fascination for companies like Bechtel and Fluor, and for the construction of oil refineries and the like.

Well, Kell,

After mastering Poker Room to the extent that a first or second place in a crappy low level 100 No limit practice chips game is an automatic, and a paying place in a 500 chip set limit sit and go is a 2 out of 3 proposition, I can safely report that I am dying of pain, insofar as "playing the hunch" undeniably leads to "hunchback", and I have spent the last two days plotting my trips to drop off and pick up my laundry. Basta internet poker! At least until it all changes. I just can't deal with being paralyzed by some ghost woman implanting a "bling" in my "gams". \\

Gah!
