FRANIAM, SAM CASSELL, THE PAPAL CONCLAVE -- JUST BEING SILLY BUT KIND OF SERIOUS
Please read Franiam's comment on Sunday's post then her blog http://festinalente-franiam.blogspot.com/. Franiam, unfortunately, left a very thoughtful comment but then left wherever she lives for a vacation. Kelso has no idea whether she'll be doing all this blog stuff while she's on vacation, but the comment needed addressing and as we have no guarantee Franiam will see Kelso's response while she's away and it does deserve a full response, it seemed like a good idea to do a whole post and see what happens.
Kelso does not suppose Franiam is much of a sports fan because he gave her a great sports-related title for her last blog before vacation decampment and it didn't do too much for her. Well, Kelso likes it because it's silly -- yes nonsense men around here -- and because this post is going to get terribly pretentious not too long from now.
During an NBA playoff game some years ago, Sam Cassell who was the best player on the visiting team had racked up a number of personal fouls and when the final foul was called on him and the ref ejected him from the game, a home-town fan held up a banner reading "SAM I WAS." Any Dr. Seuss pun, anywhere, under any circumstances, works for Kelso, so he's always love that sign. And has much love for the "Franiam" blog.
In Franiam's response, she makes an excellent rebuttal to some of Kelso's more blanket statements regarding the phrase "Judeo-Christian" values. Kelso's going to put words in her mouth her but basically she claims to agree with everything Kelso said and that dovetails perfectly with her practice of Catholicism. Kelso is going to draw a couple of inferences here and guess that Franiam is a highly-intellectual Jesuit and was a strong supporter of Martini for Pope. Kelso did not have a spiritual dog in that fight, but he had both a philosophical one (liked Martini's progressive ideas) and a financial one (a friend, Jesuit teacher in Roscommon, Ireland, inveterate gambler) gave Kelso a big tip on Martini some years earlier and when betting on the Conclave was put up, Kelso was thrilled to take 100/1 and even more thrilled when Martini won the straw poll putting Kelso in a pure-arbitrage, no-lose situation, even though his worst result happened when the betting favorite but all-around-devil Ratzinger won it. Kelso ended up a small winner for the whole shooting match.

I will be back to you my man. This whole vacation thing is keeping me busy!
Franiam loves Kelso.
I am not a Jesuit but I play one on tv!
No argument with your point of view at all. If I said it once on this blog, I've said it a million times, whether or not Jesus Of Nazareth was real or composite, the TEACHINGS attributed to him in the New Testament are as good a philosophical touchstone as any. Franiam and Kelso part company, however, on the compromise reached at the Council Of Nicaea for starters (ha-ha), and only in that Kelso doesn't believe in the supernatural.
Kelso's savvy enough to know that Franiam's not going to defend every action of "the one true church." Ni mucho menos. Kelso's got no love for organized, super-natural Judaism. Loathes it, in fact.
Franiam's belief-system and values, however, give Kelso SOME hope for something. Believers and non-believers on the LEFT can come together. The RIGHT mastered that one years ago, lucky bastards!
Oh Kelso, you are too kind. I try to have hope and if you don't believe me go read my post about how I became an idealist, just written tonight.
No I am not a Jesuit as I said before. I was away from church for a long long time and came back quite by surprise and found I could be a troublemaker and still stay.
I do have my supernatural beliefs and that's cool. I never did stop loving JC when I was away from it, I was mad at (and still am) the instiution of the RC Church.
However I decided to claim my place at the table and make noise. I figure that JC expects nothing less from me.
And yes- Martini, progressive. B16- not so much. I cried at my desk when he was announced in spring 2005.
And Kelso my man, sport things are generally lost on me!
FranIam still loves Kelso.
