There is a either a mass delusion going on in the center, center-left and left-wing blogosphere or else Kelso is in fact nuts and Kelso is 100% sane. He told me so himself.

All of this crap about Pelosi and Reid being cowards or stupid or traitors or whatever is nonsense. It's arm-chair quarterbacking of the silliest kind. It's based upon one poll which had "Congress" (which is for all intents and purposes split 50/50 Democrats/Republicans) losing popularity to 11% after authorizing Bush's domestic spying plan and a recent poll showing Bush's approval rating at 24%. Talk about post hoc ergo propter hoc! And no one understands why "impeachment is off the table". How silly? It's obvious that Bush and Cheney are guilty of various crimes and look how unpopular they are! Bullshit. Kelso carries no brief for either Pelosi or Reid; both are detestable creatures, when the minority leader positions opened up, Kelso favored Martin Frost for House Minority Leader and Chris Dodd for Senate Minority Leader.

Please think about this for a second before forming an opinion. Does anyone out there really think that Pelosi and Reid are dumb? Kelso sure doesn't. They are professionals who've lasted a long, long time and it's no accident that they've reached the positions they're in. Neither Pelosi nor Reid are as good at betting sports, trading derviatives or playing poker as Kelso is. They'd get creamed. By what right does Kelso think he's as good a party leader as either of them? Because "impeachment is off the table"? Because they've caved in to Bush at every turn? Please. Nobody out there thinks for a second that they are not privy to on-the-run polling 5 or 6 times a day by the most sophisticated pollster out there? Of course they are. They don't cave in because Bush is weak. They cave in because Bush is strong. Why is Bush strong? There are three simple reasons: 1) He never gives an inch, 2) AMERICANS LOVE WAR -- they love it more than sex or drugs or drinking or porn or damned near anything; THEY FUCKING LOVE IT MORE THAN THEY DO THEIR OWN CHILDREN FOR GOD'S SAKES 3) Bush owns the media.

The only thing anyone has on them in terms of anything is that we have more compassion than they do. But a lack of compassion combined with an ability to stand being embarrassed in public are what makes for a top-class politician. And make no mistake about it, Pelosi and Reid are top-class. That is very much not meant as a compliment.

Another naivete test: by a show of virtual hands, how many think that the Democrats took control of Congress because the people thought the Democrats were going to take a lead role in ending these wars? That many, huh? You are all nuts. What is the average percentage advantage Republicans have had over Democrats with White Men over last 30 years in every national election? The answer is 25 percentage points. What was the advantage observed in 2006? 0. Dead even. For the first time in 30 years. Why did that happen? It's not because of the wars. White women like war. White men LOVE war. Why should that changed? It shouldn't and didn't. There are two theories and Kelso finds both equally compelling: theory #1) It was a random draw from a "fat-tail" meaning an Act Of God or unexpected unforseen event like the 1987 crash or Hurricane Katrina which is very unlikely to repeat, theory #2) The Republicans afraid to campaign on the wars made the election about pot, porn, poker and penises and got very, very lucky with the Ted Haggard story breaking THE DAY of Saddam Hussein's execution, both factors completely turning men off, sending them into the no-vote or Democratic columns. Either way, AMERICANS STILL LOVE WAR AND LOVE DEATH. Republicans don't even have to waste time with this "Support The Troops" palaver. Americans of all political points of view LOVE WAR plain and simple. No, is there a top-4 contender, Democrat or Republican who is in favor of ending the wars or opposed to the death penalty? The answer is NO. Leaving aside the death penalty, the war opponents are: Kucinch, Paul, Dodd and Gravel and Huckabee (slightly).

Do you see where this is leading? The likely nominees are Clinton and Giuliani. Anyone wishing to make cases for anyone else may do so, but good luck to you. Expect Wesley Clark or Bill Richardson to be Clinton's running-mate and it doesn't much matter who Giuliani's is.

THE GIULIANI SCENARIO

Total bloodbath. Iraq basically at same troop levels with more Blackwater contractors. Random conventional air strikes on Syria and Lebanon. Depending on how Israeli elections shake out maybe ground assaults as well. Nuclear war with Iran. Or a draft. Giuliani has taken on foreign policy advisors whom the PNAC crew deemed too extreme. Daniel Pipes is one. And Norman Podhoretz is another. Game, set and match.

THE CLINTON SCENARIO

This is where Pelosi and Reid come back into the picture. They took impeachment off the table and have backed Bush all the way certainly because he's strong and they don't want to piss off too many independents so they can get their bigger majorities but that's not the big prize. To bring articles of impeachment against Bush, Cheney or anybody in the administration over anything to do with the war would shut down the option of going for the big prize. The big prize is preserving a shot at VICTORY IN IRAQ until a Clinton presidency. All she needs to do is throw the kitchen sink at Iraq, under cover of the so-called Powell Doctrine and all of the retired Generals' statements and bang! 600,000 pairs of boots on the ground whether regular Army and Marines or some combo of regulars and contractors. Whatever. If it doesn't work, big deal, she still has a shot a re-election because she is a better candidate than anybody the Republicans can find and an incumbent is not going to lose unless the economy is in the toilet or she has raised taxes. But IF IT WORKS...Huge majorities in both Houses forever. 2 certain terms. Approval ratings averaging over 60%. Maybe an oil price around $65 which will seem like heaven to the average citizen and will be perfectly fine with ExxonMobil and RoyalDutchShell. A very good chance of 2 terms of President Wesley Clark.

What's the cost? 2 trillion dollars. 30,000 American lives. 2,000,000 Iraqi lives. A massive refugee crisis. Chickenfeed.

And that my children is the PEACEFUL option. What about the others? Obama is a Fundamentalist Christian who'll do whatever Lieberman tells him to do. So, he offers the Giuliani (or McCain or Romney) scenario. Edwards is just a DLC fuckup. He'll waste half the money and half the lives that Clinton would without winning the war and resign in disgrace. Richardson is just a Mexican-American Hillary Clinton, though probably without her resolve. He can be snowballed into doing anything. Pro-life? Pro-choice? Professional baseball player? Not a professional baseball player? Against the death penalty? For the death penalty? Tough on immigration? Soft on immigration? It's whatever you'd like, sir, with Richardson. And there's no force pushing him in a dovish direction on anything.

The sickest thing about all of this is that Kelso might actually vote for Clinton!

For you "identity politics" fans out there, check out your terrific buffet from which to choose. FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT! FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN PRESIDENT! FIRST MEXICAN-AMERICAN PRESIDENT! FIRST ITALIAN-AMERICAN PRESIDENT! Makes the heart swell, don't it? Kelso's happy just to be a Kike and have the option of voting Martin Torrijos to a second term if things keep going this way.
