THIS IS SO DEPRESSING IT'S NOT EVEN DEPRESSING, LIKE, SAY...
...some horror story of a child's death half a world away.
Your Uncle Kelso has endeavored to post a youtube of the Johnny Thunders cover of EVE OF DESTRUCTION as opposed to the original because Kelso's fucking sick and tired of this 60s protest model. Strength, licentiousness and just plain old not-giving-a-fuck is what we need now, not tie-dye and patchouli and clever anti-Bush puns. Maybe a little more Johnny Thunders and a little less Woodstock is required. At least, Johnny lived it strong all the way. RIP.
Looks like it's all good to go -- even posted the version with a little non-political Johnny as a bonus -- and if Kelso has any created any new Johnny Thunders fans, they are advised to go here:

So, what's all this Chicken Little stuff about? It's about all this palaver involving taking a run at Iran. The Bush Administration has been authorized by the Democratic Congress to do whatever he likes with regard to Iran. The same media lies about Iraq are coming out again about Iran. Man, this mainstream media is fucking bloodthirsty. Not about Michael Vick killings dogs, of course, as loathsome as that is, but these useless bobbleheads are doing it again. "US" against "them." Doubtless, they've got the logos already designed. Kelso would like to say "forgive them Lord, they know not what they've done," but he can't forgive. Anybody. But this time, it hardly matters because Iran is not Iraq.
Iran is an industrialized nation of 65 million. It's GDP in 2006 was over $600 billion. It's populace are FUCKING PERSIANS. As in WAY SMARTER THAN AMERICANS. It has close to 140 billion barrels of crude reserves. And over 1 million highly trained military personnel at the ready. This latter tidbit courtesy of the now hated General John Abizaid. Sure, there are a few US Navy gunships in the Straits of Hormuz. But would someone please tell Kelso how Dick Cheney intends to win a war against Iran when the U.S. armed forces have their hands full in Iraq and Afghanistan at levels of around 200,000. Where exactly is the personnel and ordnance coming from? If any neo-con harbors the fantasy that Israel is going to do this as some kind of favor to Pat Robertson and CUFI, they better get off that fantasy pretty quick or be ready to bet Kelso everything they own that Israel, with an election coming up and Labor a likely winner, wants any piece of this. AIPAC might. CUFI might. Holy Joe Lieberman might. Israel doesn't. So, give that shit up right now.
At any rate, does anyone remember what happened when Ohmert first mentioned doing something like attacking Iran? The Chinese premier had his sorry ass on the carpet the next day and told him to sit down and shut the fuck up.
Now, then. How does the great USA plan to "win" a war against Iran. There's only one way Kelso can see: FULL-ON NUCLEAR STRIKE. THIS to salvage that pathetic cretin's legacy. OK, fine, go ahead. Do it. See what happens. Attention Mainstream Media, please lead the charge for this, please. Is it possible for that useless slave Colin Powell to be dragged back to the UN with his talcum powder vial to sell the case yet again? Probably so, as he's now Barack Obama's unofficial foreign-policy advisor and if we know one thing about Obama -- other than that he's a gutless pile of manure -- he's a bit of a rapturist and is quite close with Lieberman, James Dobson and Rick Warren. Of course, he'll lend Powell back to Bush for Talcum Powder redux.
So, once the estimable, honorable, sensible Powell does his routine again and the first nuke hits Teheran, does every neo-con and mainstream journalist think that "we" get out the bunting and celebrate? God, Kelso hopes so, because they are in for the surprise of their lives. Again, Iran is not Iraq which is just some G.I. Joe shit Cheney and Blair dreamed up and look at the damage. With Russia, China, the EU, Saudi Arabia and -- yes -- Israel doing fairly well economically, thank you, does anyone really believe none of these "friends" will retaliate against the United States with extreme prejudice for fucking things up for no good reason?
People better wake up to the fact that China, the EU, Israel and Russia will rain the bad shit on the USA at the drop of a hat. And that's it. No second chance for the species. We all go up in smoke. Kelso understands that BushCo is greedy. He understands they are a little touched when it comes to the whole religious shit. But are they really that crazy? Kelso doesn't know. As in really doesn't know. The probability of global nuclear war initiated by a US strike on Iran is surely less than a toss-up but probably greater than 5%. Well, 5% ain't much. How would you like to be told you have a 5% chance of going to prison for life? You're still a big long-shot, but how well would you sleep?
Kelso's lived every day of 46 years and doesn't have too many regrets but what about his son? What about everyone's sons and daughters? What about all the 46 year olds who have regrets?
There's one Democrat running for President who's against this: Dennis Kucinich. There is one, maybe two, Republicans: Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee. If BushCo doesn't do it, they rest of them might. "Tactical" nuclear strikes on Iran are "not off the table" as we've been told by the "responsible candidates." Even, and especially, Clinton, although it's really hard to envision her, Edwards, Richardson or Dodd doing it. And Kelso would even vote for Clinton and cross his fingers. McCain, who would probably initiate this on day one, is, thanks Mother Earth, no longer a factor. Giuliani talks like a tough-guy with a lisp, but he seems to like his creature comforts too much to end it all right now. Romney, who knows? Probably, yes. Brownback, probably not. Hard to see where his Roman Catholicism squares with Armageddon. Obama'd do it for grins. Ditto Tancredo and Hunter. But this is pointless speculation. The new president has his or her own legacy to worry about, so outside of the really goofy ones: McCain, Tancredo, Hunter, Obama and Biden, it's good old Bush/Cheney we have to worry about.
The only consolation is that there isn't enough room in that underground bunker for Candy Crowley. And -- somehow -- even the most embedded, most supplicant ones like Brit Hume and Thomas Friedman are going to have to die along with the rest of us. No matter what they're telling you -- including el lechugo hueco de Dalai Lama -- we're all headed the same place. October 2008 seems as good a time as whatever our natural lives are supposed to be, if that's what the accepted wisdom from the think-tanks say. Personally, Kelso would rather give Peace a chance or at least get a piece from chance.
Kelso's Nuts love you.

I am not sure where to begin my comments so for now I leave a brief one.
Good catch on (even tho i am hatin on him) the Brownback/Catholic issue.
We ain't down with no end times. I knew there was at least one bright spot for us.
Ever seen a bad thing on Kelso's Nuts about the words of Jesus?
It's hard to bring oneself to VOTE for Brownback, but I'm still impressed with his extremely sensitive remarks about cancer in the NH debate and I like that the "creationists", Brownback and Huckabee, seem to moving to the left of Giuliani, Romney and Crooked Talk.
This piece by a former CIA guy says that Rove and Snow are leaving the WH because they can't stomach defending an Iran war. It also says that Rummy was canned because he wanted to scale down the Iraq operations. Interesting.

Yeah, I saw it. Life kind of imitating art again. Remember the 1985 one-man stage play SECRET HONOR with Philip Baker Hall as Nixon, which posits that Nixon got himself into as much trouble as possible so as to AVOID nuking Vietnam?
There was another play a couple of years later at the Union Square with a similar theme which centered around the core goodness of former atty gen'l John Mitchell.
My friend, former 'bird investor, RM, always said as much as he hated this shit, and had voted Gore 2000, Nader 2004, he couldn't shake the feeling that there was something of the principled public servant in Rumsfeld.
Geez, Kelso, you're scaring the shit out of me! I keep trying to make myself believe that not even Bush and Cheney can be THAT evil and THAT STUPID as to start nuking Iran. But with your characteristic hard-hitting, logical prose, you have me thinking that it is inevitable.
I got an email from a friend, urging me (and everyone else she knows) to write a letter to Pelosi, urging her to bring impeachment proceedings against Bush. That would be fine, if I thought for one second those mewling cowards in Congress would put their shoulders to the wheel and do it. But NOOOOO, they're too busy farting around with age-old, who-gives-a-shit issues like the firing of U.S. Attorneys and whether or not Gonzales lied about something.
Kelso, do your duty and come back to the USE and run for office!
And run on what platform exactly?
I'm to Ron Paul's right on finance and the tax code and to Kucinich's left on everything else.
I was a hedge-fund manager and am a professional gambler.
You reckon I could get 10 votes anywhere (federal, state, local, or school board)?
Hey big pessimist! What makes you think you need a platform or political experience? NO platform or experience trumps BAD platform and experience. And *I* will vote for you at LEAST 10 times.
Well, if I run and you vote for me 10 times, maybe with some luck and if Mr. Z doesn't mind we can share a cell at Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib!
You can be my Scheherazade and keep telling those blue stories! That'll make the time in our 3x life sentences go by quicker!
Don't know if you saw any of my back-and-forth with lynn of Zelleblog over on Supergirlest's "money" post but let's just say that I didn't exactly take the "liberal" position on the sub-prime loan crisis.
I think it was a folie-de-deux and the borrowers are equally to blame. I believe US taxes are not too low; they are too high. I believe in abolishing the SEC. I believe "insider-trading" should not be a crime. I believe in the Fair Tax movement and a flat-tax with variable no-tax exemptions by geographical cost of living, albeit at a very high threshold.
How am I going to get one Democratic vote?
I believe in PEACE NOW NOW. As in NO MORE WAR. As in slashing the military budget ex-VA, ex-GI Bill of Rights. I believe in abolition of death penalty without the "safe" life-without-parole option. I believe in restoring AFDC. I believe in single-payer health insurance and universal pre-K-12 education with subsidized higher ed. I believe in legalization of drugs. I believe in abortion and contraception without restriction. I believe in affirmative action (Powell, Rice, and Thomas, notwithstanding).
How am I going to get one "moderate" or "conservative" vote?
Kelso - I think you have friends.
Now that's out of the way, I have to say thank you for providing the detail and analysis that you do in these posts. You give me all kinds of post ideas.
You're the numbers guy, I can barely balance my checkbook. So tell me, will we ever see a time when we can have real candidates not those that have been sculpted and tailored by focus groups and consultants?
Will there be enough heft on behalf of "the people" to move us toward a more realistic way to pick our elected officials?
I'm curious to know your thoughts on this. You seem to be wrestling with the same thing I am. I like Kucinich and I hate it that he's not considered a viable candidate in the media.
The short answer to your question is "NO."
For what you would like to happen, Congress would have to pass a veto-proof public-financing of campaigns law which could survive the Buckley v Valeo precedent in the legal challenges. So long as the courts continue to grant complete "personhood" to corporations, no campaign finance law with teeth could survive the Buckley v Valeo standard, because it will always be in violation of a (corporate) "person's" free-speech rights.
The two-party system means that both parties really no longer exist sa such (well, the Republican Party kind of does). They are basically broad coalitions, whose extremes elsewhere in the world would be taken up by openly Fascist and openly Socialist alternative parties.
The combination of America's economic boom along with the reduction in its importance as an exporter or finished goods or even natural resources has left "entertainment" as one of the country's most significant industries if not THE most significant. "Journalism" is now a profit-generating part of the entertainment industry and as such the job "Journalist" is as lucrative as the job "Doctor" was, say, 40 years ago and more so. This makes journalists very skittish about doing ANYTHING that might impede their careers and money-making potential. They are now (or think they are now) part of the moneyed class and are not about to do anything to fuck with that. So, they tend to adopt the positions that are favored by the corporations which employ them. Muck-raking and investigative report just doesn't pay off in either money or fame. You think Amy Goodman, Greg Palast or Seymour Hersh are lolling in loot? Is there really an incentive to do that work?
Finally -- and this has been a theme we've hit on over and over again here -- there is a cultural bias against the kind of real market-place of ideas you favor. Why? Plainly put because the country was originally settled by a very strange sect of Calvinists who left England because they couldn't tolerate the "liberalism" of the Anglican Church and because the Crown took a very dim view on some of their more violent practices such as child abuse as a matter of course and religious practice. No, the "Pilgrims" were not an oppressed minority in England; they compared unfavorably with the Branch Davidians. But the folklore lingers and colors every aspect of American life from the tendency to blame the poor for their poverty to the idea of "spare the rod, spoil the child," to the necessity for maximally baroque and cruel criminal justice system to the idea that the Constitution "does not allow freedom FROM religion" (Joe Lieberman).
People get the society they deserve and the one the majority desires. I am afraid there's not a lot of room for John Stuart Mill or Jesus for that matter. Sorry. I wish I could be more optimistic.
I think you can see why I elected to vote with my feet.
"I believe in PEACE NOW NOW. As in NO MORE WAR. As in slashing the military budget"
Z: That alone would get at least ONE of my votes.
"ex-VA, ex-GI Bill of Rights."
Z: Hmmm...not sure about that.
"I believe in abolition of death penalty without the "safe" life-without-parole option. "
Z: OK, that one gets my second vote. Repeal the "Do as I say, not as I do" amendment.
"I believe in restoring AFDC."
Another Fucking Democrat Candidate?
"I believe in single-payer health insurance"
Z: Vote number three...
"and universal pre-K-12 education with subsidized higher ed."
Z: Vote number four! It's harder to fool a well-educated public.
"I believe in legalization of drugs."
Z: Oh yeah! Votes # 5 and 6! We finally saw the light with Prohibition, why can't we wake up to the fact that you can't stop people from wanting to get high? Stop filling our goddamned prisons with petty dealers and users!
"I believe in abortion"
Z: Vote #7! It's better, much better, to abort them when they're tiny fetuses than to abuse them when they're fully developed children. I've seen much too much of the latter.
"and contraception without restriction."
Votes #9 and 10! Why can't the anti-abortion idiots see that the best way to reduce abortions is to prevent pregnancy? But NOOOOO! They don't want a woman to be able to have sex without paying the penalty (pregnancy). FUCK 'EM!
"I believe in affirmative action (Powell, Rice, and Thomas, notwithstanding)."
Z: My point exactly.
"How am I going to get one "moderate" or "conservative" vote? "
You just got 10 "moderate" ones...
