But, finally, I think it's time that if Obama supporters like identity politics and "themes" more than issues, they are going to have to confront, finally, a hard "thematic" truth: Barack Obama is an artistocrat, and way more so than Mrs. or Mr. Clinton are. His father was a Kenyan diplomat and his maternal lineage goes back to the Mayflower. I'm not sure which "streets" Obama was referring to but if he meant Chicago, he wasn't living like in Gary, Indiana, and commuting to his law practice. Not hardly. He was living in a nice part of Chicago and learning the ins-and-outs of Slavic and to a lesser extent African-American machine politics. That's not a bad thing at all. I happen to believe the urban Democratic machines were more progressive and less corrupt than their reputations. Moreover, aristocrats come in 31 flavors, too. You have good ones like TR, FDR, Reverend Coffin and Mayor Lindsay, OK ones like the Rockerfellers, Kerry and the Kennedys, and really shitty ones like the Bushes.
But make no mistake about it. Senator Clinton is a product of the middle-class, not the aristocracy, which by itself puts to rest this "dynasty" business.
