I hear you loud and clear, FAIRLANE & D-CUP. It gets to a point like you're just baying at the moon. Take someone who's a real hothead. How many people does he want to suffer, 50? 100? The rest he doesn't give a shit about. Take a really kind person. Maybe there are 1 or 2 people he wants to suffer. Maybe 100,000,000 lives he'd like to see improve. The rest he doesn't give a shit about. That leaves 99% of the Earth's population. These Right Wing crazies want EVERYBODY to suffer. So, it's really pick your poison, isn't. Fairlane, I think you and I are in the same place with regard to "liberalism" in its current form. Democrats and liberal bloggers want everything to be "fair," but it just isn't. You're at Stanford. I'm on the street corner. 'Twas ever thus. So, in absence of "fairness" meaning "equality," they settle with "fairness" meaning "compromise." And, of course, there's no need to compromise with anyone who's NOT a bully, so it's all give and no take. The perfect example is abortion. The compromise is already in place--IT'S CALLED CHOICE. OK, so the Wingnuts get all het up about it being murder and everything else. So, OK, the Democrats and liberals will try to "see it their way" and say "well, how about contraception?" But because the abortion debate is obviously not about murder or not murder (i don' approve of that point of view but I can see how a religious person might). THE ABORTION DEBATE IS ABOUT SEX AND CONTROL; BANISHING THE FORMER AND CLAWING BACK THE LATTER and there's no room for compromise there either, because the American fascists are all so ashamed of their own needs. Has any Democratic candidate even said the word "condom" or "birth control" this campaign season? Of course not. So, now slowly but surely contraceptive rights are going away. Feature this: a pharmacist by federal law is no longer required to fill any legitmate prescription at all! So, it's a short step to making contraception illegal completely but the Democrats and liberals will STILL be looking to compromise? NEVER HAPPEN IN AMERICA? OH NO? WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO ONLINE POKER? AND THE RIGHT DOESN'T EVEN CARE ABOUT THAT. IT SURE DOES CARE ABOUT YOUR ABILITY TO GET A BIRTH CONTROL PILL OR VICODIN SCRIP FILLED.

So, really why do we bother? I only bother because some days when I get in blog world I feel we're 25,000,000 strong -- us, just a cohort of rational people with a social conscience and at least ONE hair on each of our asses. Other times I write up shit like Annette Overstadt's WSOP Europe Championship, knowing that she has to wait 2 years to even compete Stateside and I KNOW I'm in no hurry to come back.
But, as long as their are Admiral Fallons and Annette Obrestads, I'll keep writing. I'll keep writing until the day comes that they can't even give away those stupid US Flag lapel pins. And 9/11 is as meaningful to the Wingnuts as 12/7 is. And then I'll write in a different language.
