What's A Sunday Without Special NFL Goings-On And Jonah Goldberg?

There's a small, liberal arts university in Middletown, CT, founded 175 years ago by the Methodist Church, which recently has gained some fame for producing a suave, debonair political blogger based in Panama and for being the cradle of AFC East head coaches. Said university is about to become part of NFL history if New England, and it's suave, debonair, head coach Bill Belichick, can go all the way. A bit of a scare yesterday. Not bad to lose a tough obstacle today, although neither IND nor SD are push-overs.

As for the NYG, either way I win, I feel. I'm happy if they beat the Cowboys. I'm unhappy if they lose, but if they lose bad enough perhaps that's the end of the "Coughlin Era." The man is a damned fool. He's a Nazi who built a head-coaching career off of ONE LUCKY PLAY in an NCAA bowl game 25 years ago because the world happens to contain a lot of Roman Catholics. His authoritarian tendencies are perfect for making two of his best players, Burress and Shockey, miserable, and for making his QB insecure every second of every day. Yet, Coughlin's insistence on "discipline" does not prevent his offensive line from leading the league in offsides penalties practically every fucking year. BELICHICK 4-EVER. MANGINI SOMEDAY TO BE SURE.

Because Tom Coughlin and fascism go together like chocolate and peanut-butter, we have a perfect segue to Jonah Goldberg speaking on his subject of choice, Liberal Fascism. Run, don't walk to:

Or if you decide to walk, go check out Jonah Goldberg on the subject on youtube.

Is Goldberg brain-dead? Who does he believe thinks the U.S. military is a fascist organization? Kelso sure don't. The military is a big and diverse institution and people join it for all sorts of reasons. It seems to have its fascist uses while in the control of Republican civilians.

He didn't really say that liberals think West Point is a fascist institution, did he? A bit of projection, no? America's service academies are among the world's elite institutions of higher learning.

OK, they are service academies, so they are different in structure from a liberal arts university like the great one alluded to above, but gee whiz, what the fuck is wrong with Jonah Goldberg? Students of the service academies are intellectuals as well as aspiring officers. (Fair enough, a few bad apples and sub-par minds like John McCain sneak in, but still, it's not like Walnuts graduated with honors; he may even have been last in his class.)

Believe Noam Chomsky, not Kelso.

Jonah Goldberg could not have gotten accepted to a US service academy with an infinity of lifetimes (error intentional, Monsieur Blaise). He is afraid to put on a uniform and serve his country, so he has chosen to put on a cheesy suit and betray his country by advocating the civilian use of the military to maintain fascism.

Kelso, as a Giant fan I have to tell you that you're a bit off base on Coughlin -- this year. All the news articles I've read and stories I've heard talk to how nice a guy he's become in the locker and how much the team loves him.

I used to like Shockey alot, but he;s become such a dick lately that I wish the Giants would ship his ass out. I'm not sure what he's dropped more this year, perfectly thrown passes or excuses for playing like shit. Seriously. Is it going to kill the guy to work out with the team?

Burress on the other hand has been a complete team player gutting out a torn ligament to be a serious threat. And now that the rookie Steve Smith is showing some promise and Eli Manning is finally stepping into a few throws, it seems like the Giants have a legitimately dangerous passing game. After all, they lit up New England for 35, despite the loss.

The fact is that Giants right now are winning by playing smart team football. Yeah, I agree that Coughlin's track record has been that of a sports fascist, but the NFL has always been a game-to-game and season-to-season proposition and this year, I have to say, the man has done pretty good by this squad.

Spartacus:

I love the NYG. They out-played their stats this year which I suppose is to Coughlin's credit. And Sunday wss a miracle. I consider it recompense for the loss to Carolina in January of 2006when they had a very, very good team, almost as good as SEA or PIT.

I don't love their chances but the weather's supposed to be so crazy it could make the result random enough that Coughlih's ultra-conservative offense may give them some egde.

I hope to have a difficult rooting decision in Super Bowl. I guess I'd root for Pat because Giants have given me plenty already; I really can't complain, and this is a special season for Belichick.
