The Pitt over WVU pick was brilliant. I actually called it for some strange reasons:

1. I hate Pitt because I'm from a Penn State family

2. The Pitt football team has no character

3. The only things that would motivate the Pitt team would be drugs, money, sex, or the opportunity to totally fuck up the lives of a bunch of WVU hillbillies

Too bad I don't gamble.

Good thing you don't gamble. This is a common mistake nearly every fan makes, applying concepts familiar to the fan to the college or pro athlete or team. I have no idea whether or not "character" exists but I know that we don't have to tools with which to do so yet. The way a fan perceives "character", though, is not measurable because it doesn't exist. NCAA sports are pretty much professional sports and these kids have been doing this since they were 5 years old or so. The vast majority of the play is automatic. NCAA fortball may lend itself to some non-football factors such as look-aheads, bounces, overweight importance of coaching changes but generally speaking those are caputured by the results.

You can make an argument that boxing is a test of "character" in those terms but the ability to "take punches" is a quantifiable skill. Personality is important but not in the way you think. Highly intelligent fighters with relaxed personalities (Lewis, Jones, Mayweather, Trinidad down to J. Smith, M. Spinks, for example) have longer and more successful careers than beserkers do (Bowe,Cooney, Tapia, Tyson, for example). Fans, of course, hate technical proficiency and a professional bearing. They want to see a brawl and the cerebral fighter goes against every prejudice they have. The bright guys are thought to lack "character" in one way, the beserkers in a different way, but "character" is always a code word for "white".
