Well, there was a reason I mentioned commenters needing to behave themselves and that what I considered "good behavior" was refraining in commenting that I'm wrong and you're right and you know more about this than I do because I'm a liberal and so forth.
I told you yesterday that Ecuador would get dragged into this and I was right. The most recent news on the whole tits-up I present forthwith:

Bogotá, 3 mar (EFE).- La crisis diplomática que afronta Colombia con Ecuador y Venezuela generó hoy toda clase de reacciones en la comunidad internacional, que van desde el rechazo a una aparente violación de la soberanía ecuatoriana a un llamado a las partes para que manejen la situación con calma y prudencia.
La crisis se desató por una operación militar colombiana que concluyó con la muerte en territorio ecuatoriano del líder guerrillero "Raúl Reyes", vocero y "número dos" de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC).
Tras la operación, el presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, cerró su embajada en Bogotá, mientras que el mandatario de Ecuador, Rafael Correa, retiró a su embajador en Colombia, Francisco Suéscum, y expulsó al embajador colombiano en Quito, Carlos Holguín.
Además, ambos mandatarios reforzaron militarmente la frontera de sus países con Colombia.
Para resolver la crisis, el secretario general de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA), José Miguel Insulza, convocó para este martes un Consejo Extraordinario del organismo.
Junto a los llamados a la calma, casi todos los Gobiernos en la región se solidarizaron con el Gobierno ecuatoriano y condenaron los hechos.
El presidente de Perú, Alan García, calificó de "inaceptable" la invasión del territorio ecuatoriano, pero mostró su preocupación por las denuncias del Ejecutivo colombiano sobre los supuestos vínculos entre las FARC y el Gobierno de Ecuador.
De igual manera, la presidenta de Chile, Michelle Bachelet, señaló: "no podemos estar de acuerdo en que no se respeten las fronteras y lamentamos que Ecuador se haya sentido agredido".
También, el jefe de Estado de Paraguay, Nicanor Duarte, condenó la "agresión a la soberanía" y abogó porque "este conflicto se pueda resolver sin poner en riesgo la paz y la estabilidad en la región".
En Argentina, fuentes de la cancillería dijeron estar "muy consternadas" por la "evidente violación de la soberanía territorial" de Ecuador durante la incursión militar colombiana.
El ministro de Relaciones Exteriores, Jorge Taiana, ha mantenido conversaciones con sus pares de Brasil, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Paraguay y Venezuela para "intercambiar información, realizar consultas y trabajar para coordinar una posición común".
Una de las reacciones más fuertes fue la del diputado brasileño Florisvaldo Fier, vicepresidente del Parlamento del Mercosur, quien afirmó que Colombia "no es un vecino confiable".
"La postura del Gobierno colombiano compromete la integración regional", sobre todo cuando el ataque a las FARC en suelo ecuatoriano ocurrió cuando está planteada para fin de mes una cumbre de la Unión de Naciones Suramericanas (UNASUR), precisamente en Colombia, dijo.
El ex presidente cubano Fidel Castro afirmó que se "escuchan con fuerza" en Suramérica "las trompetas de la guerra, como consecuencia de los planes genocidas del imperio yanqui".
Para dar una solución a la crisis diplomática, varios gobernantes latinoamericanos ofrecieron su mediación.
El secretario general de la ONU, Ban Ki-moon, expresó su preocupación por el aumento de la tensión entre Colombia y sus países vecinos y pidió a todos que solucionen sus problemas mediante el diálogo.
El presidente de México, Felipe Calderón, dijo que apoyará "cualquier acción" que le sea requerida por parte de Colombia y Ecuador "que favorezca el diálogo" entre esas naciones para que la relación bilateral "recupere su normalidad lo antes posible".
El presidente de Brasil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, conversó con varios presidentes de Suramérica para intentar buscar una solución a la crisis, aseguró su asesor internacional, Marco Aurelio García.
El Gobierno de EE.UU. hizo un llamado a la calma y pidió que Ecuador y Colombia resuelvan sus tensiones a través de la OEA.
"Urgimos la calma de Ecuador y Colombia para resolver este incidente diplomático. Creemos que la OEA es un vehículo apropiado para que esos países encuentren una solución", dijo Bárbara Rocha, portavoz del Departamento de Estado.
El portavoz del Consejo Nacional de Seguridad de EE.UU., Gordon Johndroe, calificó de "extraña" la reacción del Gobierno de Venezuela "a los esfuerzos de Colombia contra las FARC".
Las FARC, recordó Johndroe, son "un organización terrorista que sigue reteniendo rehenes colombianos, estadounidenses y de otros países".
En Francia, la muerte del número dos de las FARC "no es una buena noticia", a juicio del ministro de Exteriores, Bernard Kouchner, quien pidió "redoblar los esfuerzos" por la liberación de los rehenes de la guerrilla, en primer lugar la colombo-francesa Íngrid Betancourt.
"No es una buena noticia" que "Reyes", "el hombre con el que hablábamos y teníamos contactos, "haya sido matado", afirmó Kouchner.
Miguel Ángel Moratinos, ministro español de Asuntos Exteriores, pidió a los Gobiernos de Colombia y Ecuador que "resuelvan las diferencias y tensiones a través del diálogo, la colaboración y la cooperación".
El ministro de Asuntos Exteriores de Italia, Massimo D'Alema, expresó su "perplejidad y preocupación" por la incursión armada colombiana contra las FARC en territorio ecuatoriano.
El Gobierno alemán recomendó "prudencia" a todas las partes involucradas en la crisis.

The rest of the world asks for calm and condemns violence on all sides. The USA has picked it's villain. You get one guess and the first guess doesn't count.
OK. So, the good news is the international reaction, the bad news is that the 2002 Iraq paradigm is in place again. The good news is that the box-office take of a Will Ferrell movie was higher up on the headlines of La Estrella than this story was. We may get lucky here and get this resolved. I'm also pleased that Gordon Johnroe not Condoleeza Rice was the chosen spokesperson and his words, though silly and completely out of step with the views of the rest of the developed world, were measured. Also good was that the first USA statement was a bland appela for calm. Final, and slightly more esoteric good note to take away from the article is the reaction of Garcia of Peru who in the 80s was one of Abrams, Negroponte, North and Reich's main boys, did not approve of Colombia's move on Ecuador, but nevertheless got in his dig at Venezuela.
Life, at least in Panama, goes on. As for Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela...well, I'm not in a real big hurry to go visiting. And I speak the language and "pass."
A word to the wise. If you have a pale complexion and a shitty accent or no Spanish at all, this isn't a real good time to do any tourism in the region on a US passport. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Central America from Chihuahua to Panama are probably OK. Business travel anywhere shouldn't be a problem. But for the American business traveller, I'd recommend suits-and-ties, not business "casual". And please, please, please, please...because appearances to the contrary notwithstanding, I do NOT hate America or Americans...if you have to come here on business, LEAVE THE FLAG PIN AND THE YELLOW RIBBONS AT HOME. AND FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, NO McCAIN BUTTONS.

Meanwhile, what with a full weekend of three 12+ hour work days and blogging and a local war, I was exhausted and last night watched on CityMix and CityVibe (a couple of our cinephile channels with movies subtitled in Spanish): Me, Myself and Irene, Four Brothers, Gridlock'd, and The Pope Of Greenwich Village. The only one I hadn't seen before was the first and while I'm not a huge fan of comedies or slapstick, I thought this was pretty funny, and had some cool touches like cameos by Cam Neely and Brendan Shanahan in roles other than themselves.
I don't have a post in me connecting Me, Myself and Irene with the Rhode Island primary, but I could easily think one up.
I slept for 10 hours and feel rested and ready.

There's another intersting bit in this article. The President of Paraguay's none too keen on what Colombia has done. Why is that significant? Because when Bush leaves office, he's coming down to Paraguay, presumably because he discovered the joys of living in countries without extradition treaties with the USA. The only problem is that if the President of Paraguay is not backing Bush's side in COLOMBIAN RIGHT/USA v COLOMBIAN LEFT/VENEZUELA/ECUADOR one can only imagine how the people feel.

There are only two curses: "Cancer" and "Hitler." When my sister and I were kids and we heard either of our parents use either of those words we were running away at lightning speed.
So, the office of homeland security should know that i'm only having a little wholesome fun at the president's expense. If I wanted to be nasty I'd say one or both of the above.
