Sesame Street time. These three things are not like the others. No, Clemens, Pettitte and Roberts happened to be the only White stars currently active who were named in the report.
Clemens got up there in front of Congress and lied through his teeth. Clemens is an asshole. He's so much of an asshole that he aliented his two best friends: Pettitte and Jerry McNamee, his present accusers. Clemens, though, is merely an asshole. He is not a stupid man. Why would he do something that stupid? Because he had to know that if Mukasey was going to allow Miers and Bolten to defy a subpoena, is there a chance he'd allow Clemens, another close friend of George W. Bush, to have any stress whatsoever?
That's Clemens. What of Bonds? This was really bugging me because I like Barry Bonds. There are only three possible "greatest hitters" of all time and they are Bonds, Ruth and Josh Gibson and to ascertain whether or not Gibson is #1, #3 or at worst #10 is going to take some math no one has bothered with yet. I like that Bonds is cranky. I like that he's a depressive like me. I like that he's intelligent. I like that I've gotten to enjoy the performance of one of the best. I like that liking him allows me to be so contrary about something so obvious. I like that in his first breakthrough year, 1990, I had cashed a challenge bet of the Pirates+10 wins at 5/1 versus the Mets (my favorite team--this was tough to do!) with Bonds helping them just run away and hide in the NL East. I don't believe that steroids were a huge part of anything Bonds (or Clemens for that matter achieved). I list Mike Gimbel's Historical RPA Ratings (tm) of the top ten Major League hitters and pitchers of all-time. These ratings have been normalized for era, so having played in a so-called "steroid era" is irrelevant to what's here.
HITTERS
- Barry Bonds
- Babe Ruth
- Ted Williams
- Mickey Mantle
- Hank Aaron
- Stan Musial
- Willie Mays
- Lou Gherig
- Ty Cobb
- Mel Ott
PITCHERS
- Walter Johnson
- Roger Clemens
- Greg Maddux
- Grover Cleveland Alexander
- Pedro Martinez
- Lefty Grove
- Randy Johnson
- Tom Seaver
- Cy Young
- Christy Mathewson
I think that both Bonds and Clemens should be first ballot Hall-Of-Famers with no bullshit. I also think that neither have any business spending time in Stony Lonesome. I assumed that Clemens wouldn't and Bonds would. But, at least for today--NOT SO FAST.
Hello! It seems like good sense took hold of Judge Susan Ilston. It was a federal court in San Francisco, though. If Gerorge W. Bush can lie his country into a war, he can get self-same Michael Mukasey to twist a few arms to get a change-of-venue in order to hold the trial in David Duke's rec room.
I also saw an important number tonight. (minus 700). In my next post I'll explain what that has to do with Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John McCain. I'll probably write the nicest stuff about Obama I've ever written since the 2004 speech that scared me -- we atheists get a little froggy when a Democrat thunders about a "Mighty Gawd" -- and made me think that Obama was going to send the Church Police after me. Even if that was possibly true then, it's irrelevant now, anyway. Even if Obama ran with Lieberman and formed a Church Police force with Pat Robertson running it, they'd never find me if they searched for the next 50 years. And that's only modest paranoia, nieces and nephews. There is no mistaking that Obama's coterie does indeed include Lieberman and Robertson.
Now, I have to bear in mind that number (minus 700) and that I once wrote on this blog that I believed of every candidate in the race for the presidency I could only assign one of them a non-trivial probability of starting a global thermonuclear war: John McCain.
I still believe that and I'll pick it up with the next post.

I came over from Torrance's blog. I love it here! You have a fine mind. I like that in a blog!
You are so on point with the whole steroids mess. So far only Marion Jones is going to jail. You can make your own observations about that.
I look forward to your follow-up.
Good stuff!
Lovebabz:
Thank you so much for your kind words. My friend FAIRLANE http://fairlane.wordpress.com/ turned me on to Torrancee's blog and I got addicted pretty quickly. He's got something great going on over there -- which reminds me of something I have to add in my follow up "The -700 Club" that's positive about Obama.
For me, the ultimate and perhaps ONLY male leftist Obama skeptic, that's pretty funny.
Marion Jones and Greg Montgomery are two other cases that irritate me, but I'm not a Track & Field fan so I get the unfairness on an intellectual level but not at a gut-level. The intellectual level is simple: either make one standard for all with regard to doping and give it teeth or allow everything and let the athlete make the choice. I'm for the latter and for PAYING NCAA men's and women's cagers and men's gridders, but that's an argument for another day.
I'm off to check our yout site.
kelso
can you tell me why congress is even bothering with this. arent there wars to fight, stimuli to dole out, taxes for the rich to cut?
the whole kids idolize these guys argument doesnt sit with me --- that is a parent's responsibility, not the nanny-congress. the whole baseball has a monopoly exemption clause also doesnt sit with me --- take it away congress - who is gonna start another league?
clemens lied through his teeth and yes he is an ass -- so what? how does that effect ANYTHING? baseball has been horrible at policing there own players. again so what? the only way baseball would learn that steroid are unacceptable is for people to stop going to games. money talks, not congress. this will not change anything one iota. am i correct that baseball didnt even have rules against steroids for the longest time?
and as you know, i dont even like baseball.
another reason to just hate the US government.
or maybe i am just missing someting (dont answer that my friend!)
No, dcap, you pretty much hit the nail on the head. This whole thing is utterly pointless. When every legitimate problem is fixed, then you can save the precious role model that is professional sports. HA HA HA.
I know sports better than I knew my own 2nd wife, and I think you are exactly right on all of it, D-CAPny.
Congressional Democrats wanted to stick it to one of Bush's close friends and Congressional Republicans wanted to see if they could save the White superstar and frind of Chimpy while fucking the Black one. Also, the wars are complicated and the economy is more complicated, and this is simple and easy to grandstand upon because ALL people like sports more than almost anything else other than sex.
And I'm not one of those prudes who complain about athletes getting paid so-and-so and teachers not getting paid sah-and-sah. A society rewards that which it most prizes. Twas ever thus, twill ever be. Nor am I a right-wing fuckwit who worries more about team owners' finances than they do rooting for a winning team.
I know something about finance and tax law and take this shit to the bank and borrow against it: IF A SPORTS TEAMS IS PROFITABLE, THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE GUARANTEES THAT EFFECTIVELY THAT TEAM'S PLAYERS ARE PLAYING FOR FREE!
Tattoo that on your leg, boys. It's absolutely true. But don't believe me. Go to the Veeck v US DEPT OF TREASURY tax court case and check out the ACRS table in the most current IRS code book.
Gosh, you are so on point I can barely stand it. Most folks are not paying attention to the back story on this and you laid it out beautifully--in regards to the Congressional Dems vs Bush' posse.
I am liking you! I am really liking you! I will be back...often!
Oh and thanks for stopping by and posting. I love those long posts where it feels like a real conversation.

Thanks for thinking I am "Lovely" such a gentlemanly thing to say!
hey, u know i wrote about the same thing a while back, are we twins LOL its called clemen-cy
T: I think we just might be. We're the same age. We're both deeply into sports, prob/stat, and finance and we're both mad as hatters.
There was a movie like this called SUTURE, I think. Dennis Haysbert was the black "twin" and I don't remember who played the white one.
